
This is not grand strategy in the vein of other titles like Age of Wonders: Planetfall or even Crusader Kings III Victoria 3 is about running a nation, governing every aspect of it from taxation to market prices, import and export of goods, trade deals, infrastructure and government decrees. I’ve always entered their universes with a certain amount of trepidation and come out feeling oddly smarter than when I went in, whether a new universe like Stellaris or an established franchise like Crusader Kings.īut Victoria 3 had me stumped right from the start and took me hours to even begin to understand. If it carries their name, either for development or distribution, you can almost guarantee a degree of quality and attention to detail rarely matched by any but the genre-leaders. Paradox are counted among the very best creators and publishers of civilisation sims. Not to mention how many rabbit holes there are.

Existing fans of the series will be nodding right now like a parent whose child has just told them the sky is blue and stinging nettles hurt, but as a newcomer to this particular franchise I was genuinely surprised by just how deep the rabbit hole goes. Their attitudes to each other are constantly changing as the world around you changes, influences from without and within, always creating pressure on your empire and your people.At the risk of sounding like an uneducated pleb, Victoria 3 is a seriously complex game. Each region and expanding out, you find that different groups of people hold different levels of influence. This is just one example of what can happen, and it's barely the tip of the iceberg. For example, if you go to war or enter something that resembles the start of a war, a sort of political war of words and favour currying, and you lose that and subsequently lose a territory of quite wealthy, upper class, people, another part of your empire may suddenly fall off a cliff-edge as the items they were manufacturing no longer have a place to be sold. The different territories of your nation naturally feed into others in a game that shows true world-level economics and how intertwined everything is better than any I've seen before. What is important is that each territory is different. The changes you make, the political capital you expend is all limited by the class that is truly at the top of the chain in your territory. I was quite impressed with the level of detail that this game goes into, particularly on a societal and political level. Looking at these bullet points and having seen an hour of gameplay of Victoria 3, this all seems pretty accurate. Play any nation on earth and try to claim your place in the sun. Detailed and Living World: Cities grow and factories darken the landscape on a beautifully drawn map of the 19th century globe.Political Dealmaking: Manage competing interests in your government, opening up new reforms but risking revolution if key voices are not heard.Challenging Diplomacy: Maintain harmonious relations with your neighbors or provoke a crisis to grab valuable resources or force open new markets.Sophisticated Economic System: Import goods to keep costs low, export goods to enrich your citizens, and then tax that wealth to advance your plans.Wonders of the Industrial Age: Scientific and social progress give you the chance to improve the lives of your citizens.Tend Your National Garden: Nurture your population, educating it and preparing it for the future, guaranteeing their prosperity and improving their happiness.Deep Societal Simulation: Cultural, economic and ideological divisions compete for power and resources in one of Paradox’s most detailed historical worlds.What I will do is list the bullet points that Paradox Interactive have kindly provided: I'm not going to go into everything because I honestly don't know it all.

Victoria is a series I honestly haven't put that many hours into, so watching an hours’ worth of gameplay left me feeling a little cold. The thing for me is that Hearts of Iron has always been my Paradox Development Studio game. I need to say something and be honest, watching a good amount of gameplay of Victoria 3 in a pre-PDXCon event for press, this isn't a game for spectators.

It's also a game sticking true to its roots and looking to add more detail than ever before.

Those people waiting for the meme no longer need to live in hope Victoria 3 has been announced.

Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Victoria and Hearts of Iron, a full millennium of grand strategy. While not quite to the level of Half-Life 3, Victoria 3 is a game that has been constantly and consistently requested by fans of the earlier games, fans of Paradox Interactive and grand strategy fans in general. For years this has felt more like a meme than anything else.
